Can you machine wash a Britax car seat even though it says to hand wash? My baby vomited all in it.?

I've owned a Britax seat for 3 years now, and have washed the cover numerous times (we have a dd who gets carsick on any trip longer than 20 minutes).

Gentle cycle/handwashables cycle, cold water, and extra rinse if necessary. Dry on low heat or hang dry if you have time.

My cover has never shrunk.

The main reason you aren't supposed to machine-wash covers is the flame retardancy. It can be washed out and they don't want that. I'd rather not have flame retardant chemicals on something my dd is all over, all the time, but that's just me. :o)

Harness straps cannot be machine washed at all. This is very important. The webbing can be weakened and may not restrain properly in a crash. Britax allows you to clean with warm water and mild soap, and you can swish the straps in water, but not soak them. Other manufacturers say to not even submerge the straps in water, to sponge-clean only. Can you machine wash a Britax car seat even though it says to hand wash? My baby vomited all in it.?
Yes, mine says handwash only, too, but because I know the reasons behind it, I feel quite comfortable washing mine in the machine. :o) A spare cover could be a good idea, too! Report Abuse

They make car seats that are not machine washable?
no way! It will shink and you know it was too expensive to ruin. Call them and ask a rep how best to handle this

heres the number 1-704-409-1700 and the website is britaxUSA.com

Also, mine is like microfiber so it can be handwashed with baby shampoo.
try the gentile cycle

with a bunch of towles to prtect it. use less soap, and remove any thing that can be romove. remember the towles. do not dry it and use COLD COLD COLD water, if you use warm the material will shrink, as the dryed will do the same. lave it to dry in the ope of by a fan if you need it right away. some bras say hand wash. but i read that you can do this with some materials and fabrics, not all of course like the expensive delicate things.

hope this helps.
I haven't washed a Britax car seat cover but I generally wash everything in the machine washer even when it says hand wash. I would just place it on the mildest setting (my old washer has a ';handwash'; setting as well as a ';gentle'; setting) and use cold water and the gentlest soap- I use woolite, and then make sure you air dry it and position the seat to dry it in the way you want it to dry. Like a sweater you don't want to fold a sweater when you dry it or it dries that way. Sure it is an expensive seat but you won't want to use it if you think it is still pukey, you will feel better about it if you know it is clean. The Britax company is trying to be extra safe in how they advise people to take care of their products. You bought the seat for the benefit of your baby, not for investment purposes right? So make it nice for your baby again.
